A small-group guided tour of wineries along the Alsace wine route, with tastings. It departs from Strasbourg, across the Rhine from Freiburg.

Overview

This full-day tour runs out of Strasbourg, with a 9:00am start and eight hours on the road. A guide drives a small group of no more than eight people along the Route des Vins d'Alsace in an air-conditioned minivan.

The day combines two things: village time and cellar time. You stop in wine-route villages such as Dambach-la-Ville, Ribeauvillé, Mittelbergheim and Riquewihr, and you visit three wineries for tastings along the way. Expect to sample the varieties Alsace is known for, including Gewürztraminer and Riesling. Reviewers describe winemakers who take time to explain their wines and their terroir, and one called the tasting portions generous. Lunch is not included, and food and drinks beyond the tastings are at your own expense.

It suits adults who want a structured introduction to Alsatian wine without doing the driving themselves. Children under 18 are not allowed, the tour is not wheelchair accessible, and at least two adults are needed for a departure to run.

What To Expect From The Tour

A few practical points will help you plan the day, from what the tastings do and don't include to how the small group shapes the pace.

Common issues. The tour needs a minimum of two adults to run, and if that minimum is not met you are offered a different date or a full refund. It does not run on December 25th or January 1st. Lunch, food and drinks beyond the three included tastings are at your own cost, as are gratuities, personal insurance and hotel transfers. The tour is not wheelchair accessible. One reviewer felt their guide favoured certain wineries over the group's interests, though the overwhelming majority praised the winery selection and the guides' knowledge.

Common Questions

What is included in the price?

An English-speaking qualified driver-guide, three wine tastings, and transport in an air-conditioned minivan are all included. Lunch, additional food and drinks, gratuities, hotel pickup and drop-off, and personal insurance and expenses are not.

Where does the tour meet and when?

The meeting point is in front of the Strasbourg Tourism Office at 17 Place de la Cathédrale, and the departure time is 9:00am. You should arrive ten minutes early, and the tour ends back at the same spot, except during the Christmas period when the return is just outside the Grande-Ile district.

Can children join the tour?

No. This is an adults-only tour and children under 18 are not allowed. It is also not recommended for pregnant travellers, and pets cannot come along.

Is lunch or food provided during the tastings?

No. In France, snacks are usually not provided during wine tastings in order to preserve the purity of the wine's flavour, so eat a good breakfast beforehand. Any food and drinks beyond the three included tastings are at your own expense.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancel at least 24 hours before the 9:00am start for a full refund. Cancellations or changes made inside that window are not refunded or accepted. If the operator cancels for poor weather or because the minimum traveller number is not met, you are offered a different date or a full refund.

Is the tour accessible for limited mobility?

The listing states the tour is not wheelchair accessible, though the meeting point is near public transportation. Most travellers can participate, but be aware the day involves travel by minivan between stops.
